The
US President elect is against torture of any form, hence closes Guantánamo

US
PRESIDENT ELECT
Lincoln
George Truman, know as Linc Truman, worked his way through law school, then studied local
administration and political history, before entering public life as a
Democrat candidate in California, taking a strong stand on important issues
such as climate change, defence, sustainable government. This impressed people in his congressional district, who were campaigning for the same
issues, but without a strong and articulate voice to be heard.
Truman
did not set out to enter politics, but found other presidential candidates
under-informed, more concerned with bowing to popular opinion and towing the party
line with multiple 'U' turns, than actually making a difference. He was
unusual in being consistent, with strong views supported by scientific
facts. His honesty was a breath of fresh air. He always admitted when he'd
made a mistake, rather than cover it up.
The media liked his Foreign Policies based on common sense. He was keen on
negotiation, rather than open conflict, but was not a wimp. When it came to
defense, he was in favor
of replacing men on the ground with robotic
infantrymen, and developing
autonomous naval and airborne solutions, that he thought would be more of a
deterrent, than conventional pilots and captains - and save American lives. This lost him a lot of
friends in the weapons industries at first, but the situation soon recovered, as the
traditionalists had to accept there was money to be made, but not with
dinosaur equipment. In fact, business had increased.
President
Truman is a human rights advocate and an environmentalist at heart. He had closed
down Guantánamo
Bay. In Congress, he is known as 'The Californian,' where California is
big on clean air laws, from years of carcinogenic smog's. He drives an EV
and is pushing for energy sustainability, making enemies of many fossil fuel
companies. He does not like nuclear weapons, looking for alternatives to
keep the peace.
The
fictional President in this original story is being taken for a ride by his
Homeland Security and National Intelligence agencies, including the CIA's
Jack Mason, an unwilling participant, who at least levels with John Storm in
part, that he was forced to work with directors Iras Charmian and Dr Stefan
Raengst.
US Congress is
similar to British Parliament. America has a bicameral legislature, which means there are 2 houses. The upper house is called the Senate
(British House of
Lords) and the lower, the House of Representatives. The primary duty of the legislature (Congress) is to make laws that govern the country.
To be a Senator, you have to be at least 30 years old. The House consists of 100 Senators, 2 from each State. Membership of the House of Representatives is open from 25 years of age.
The Cabinet (executive branch) is headed by the President.
Created on September 17, 1787 (effective June 21, 1788) the US constitution is the longest standing in the world. With 7 articles and 27 amendments, it is also one of the shortest constitutions in the world.
The eligibility criteria to contest for president include (a) minimum 35 years of age (b) natural-born citizen of the US (c) must have lived in the US for a minimum of 14 years. The term of office is 4 years, with a maximum of two terms.
The US has never had a female President. The two major parties are Republicans (conservatives) and Democrats (liberals).
Barack Obama was a Democrat.
To win, a presidential candidate must secure 270 out of 538 seats.
